The city



The city

The neighborhood known as the City of London, is placed to the east of the city, closely together of San Paul's Cathedral, and is the place where London had his original center, though the great fire of 1666 (there exists there a commemorative column of the tragic event to which it is possible to rise by means of his 311 steps to enjoy a wonderful sight) and the intense bombardments suffered in the Second World War have transformed completely this neighborhood, which nowadays is the financial center of London, where ancient buildings are mixed by the most modern skyscrapers. In the 90s there was begun the construction of hotels and shopping centers.

St. Paul's Cathedral

This cathedral stands out of other ancient London churches for being the first church constructed by the Romans. It is possible to come to the dome and see more closely the wonderful landscape of London. In the interior is outlined the mosaic of Byzantine inspiration, on the Creation of the World. Also it is possible to visit the crypt and the exchequer.

The holding a permit visit is very useful and the histories on the prominent figures buried in the crypt are curious, and up to also they allow the access to zones that are not free.

Millenium Bridge

The Bridge of the Millenium is a suspension, pedestrian bridge that crosses the river Thames joining Bankside's zone with the City .El south side of the bridge The Globe is near the theatre, of the Gallery of Bankside and of the Tate Modern. The north side of the bridge is near the City of London School and of San Paul's Cathedral. Thanks to the position of the bridge it is possible to see a beautiful dress of the south front of San Paul's Cathedral, framed by the supports of the bridge. This one is one of the most photogenic places of the Cathedral.

The design of the bridge was chosen by contest, in 1996. The construction began at the end of 1998, was opened On June 10, 2000 and a few structural failures, they did that this one had to be an enclosure two days after his opening, to realize modifications, after a probation period it was re-opened On February 22, 2002.

The globe

The theatre The Globe was on the banks of the river Thames in the suburbs of the city of London; it is believed that it was a polygon of approximately 30 meters of diameter (approximate measure that was sharing with the rest of the theatres of the epoch) this size was allowing the revenue of a whole of 3351 spectators, in spite of it is not possible to know if the theatre offered any function with his fulfilled capacity. In 1613 a fire destroyed the facilities of the theatre; nevertheless it was immediately reconstructed in 1614 and demolished in 1644. In the year 1997 the theatre returned to open his doors under Shakespeare's Globe's name Theatre respecting the forms of the former construction. The enclosure is to approximately 200 meters of the site where it opened his doors for the first time. As original alone theatrical works are exposed during the summer station, but unlike this, only it has capacity for approximately 1500 persons.

This theatre used as welcome to the theatrical company Lord Chamberlain's Men in which there was taking part the famous playwright William Shakespeare; this enclosure had the honor of being a cradle of such works as The king Lear, Julio César, Macbeth, Hamlet, Otelo, etc.

Tate gallery

Tate is the name with the one that knows itself to the National Gallery of British art and modern art in England. South Bank

Is the area of London that stays to the south of the river Thames, near Waterloo's Station and that receives to an important number of buildings and cultural institutions. Actually it is a dynamic nucleus with numerous theatres, galleries of art and audiences.
